On the Permanence of Arrogance and Stupidity in the Face of Prudence

"Is it not truly extraordinary that arrogance and stupidity are more constant than prudence?"

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, Book 5, Thought 18

In philosophical literature, the words of Marcus Aurelius ring like bells, reminding us of the eternal struggle between wisdom and ignorance. In one of his most profound meditations, the emperor-philosopher challenges us with a disturbing question: Is it not truly extraordinary that arrogance and stupidity are more constant than prudence?

To immerse ourselves in this reflection, we must first unravel its meanings.

Arrogance is the poisoned fruit of the unbridled ego. It manifests itself in the excessive presumption of superiority over others, in the disparagement of the opinions of others, and in the lack of humility to recognize our own limitations. Does it resonate with someone you know? I've stumbled upon several individuals who fit this definition perfectly. I can also name famous people who possess this infamous feature.

Stupidity, on the other hand, is the twin sister of ignorance. It is not only the lack of knowledge, but also the inability or reluctance to acquire it. It is willful blindness to the truth, a stubbornness to cling to erroneous ideas, with negligence in the exercise of critical thinking. And in many cases the quality of such individuals is self-imposed and incorporated with the famous excuse "I am like that."

In contrast to them, there is the virtue of prudence, which guides us to the path of wisdom. This implies the ability to make thoughtful and deliberate decisions, carefully considering the consequences of our actions. Prudence teaches us to listen before we speak, to think before we act, and to recognize the uncertainty inherent in life.

Now, let us return to the question: How can we explain the constancy of arrogance and stupidity in the face of prudence?

The answer lies in the very nature of these concepts. Arrogance and stupidity are like weeds that take root deep in the soil of the human condition. They are easier to grow, as they require little effort and self-assessment. Prudence, on the other hand, is a delicate flower that needs to be constantly cared for and nurtured. It requires humility to recognize our own limitations, courage to face the truth, and perseverance to seek knowledge.

Moreover, the constancy of arrogance and stupidity can also be explained by its seductive simplicity. It's easier to cling to simplistic beliefs and narratives that reinforce our worldview, even if they're false or harmful. Prudence, on the other hand, compels us to face the complexity of the world with humility and open-mindedness.

Ultimately, Marcus Aurelius' question challenges us to reflect on our own choices and priorities in life. Do we opt for the easy path of arrogance and stupidity, or do we strive to cultivate the virtue of prudence? The answer can determine not only our personal destiny, but also the destiny of humanity itself.
